Think about your home, what appliances do you have that use electricity? And how many of them do you keep plugged in all the time? If you already have an idea where this is going you may skip the following if you wish.
* Most appliances use a mode called "Standby" This means the appliance is in a state where it is turned off, but is easily re-activated. When you turn off your TV, PC; Radio or any other appliance, you assume it is turned off now, and thats that. The truth is the appliance still stays in consumption mode.
The main appliances that fall under this category are:
Media devices (TV, Radio, VCR, DvD players, PC) etc.
Devices that use a timer.
Devices with rechargeable batteries.
Devices that use "Quick Start" mode (Mouse, keyboard, modem, for turning the PC back on)
These devices, if plugged in, may be around 10% of your power consumption. Depending on how old the device is and its condition.
SO what should you do?
- Unplug the device - Yes it is that easy, if you don't use it, don't keep it plugged in. Especially the devices that you use seldom or irregularly.
- When dealing with PCs - Disable on the fly settings of "Wake on keyboard, modem, any key" and commands like this. This means the PC does not need to keep using power for these operations.
- A radical way is to buy "Energy efficient" new devices that use around 1% power on standby.
Also buy energy saving light pulps. And dont forget to turn off the light when ypu are not in the room :)
If you already knew it, thats fine, but to anyone who hasn't really thought of it, try it.
Best Regards,
Azraeil
